Refrigerator Making Noise
Aurora CO Repair
Clicking, humming, rattling, banging, or buzzing from your refrigerator? Different sounds point to different problems. I diagnose and fix all refrigerator noises in Aurora.
A noisy refrigerator is trying to tell you something. The type of sound usually points directly to the failing component. After years of service calls in Aurora, I’ve learned to diagnose by ear before I even open a panel β a clicking compressor sounds nothing like a rattling condenser fan, which sounds nothing like an evaporator fan scraping on ice. Here’s the decoder ring.
What causes a refrigerator to make a clicking noise every few minutes?
Clicking every 2β5 minutes is almost always the compressor trying to start and failing. The start relay β a small component that helps the compressor motor start β has failed. This is one of the cheapest refrigerator repairs: the relay costs $15β$25 and takes 15 minutes to replace. If you hear this, call me β don’t ignore it, because eventually the compressor will overheat from repeated failed starts.
Refrigerator Noise Diagnosis Guide
Clicking Every Few Minutes
Failed start relay. The compressor can’t start. Inexpensive fix β $90β$130 total. Don’t delay; prolonged failed starts can damage the compressor.
Loud Humming or Buzzing
Usually a condenser or evaporator fan with a failing bearing, or a condenser fan hitting accumulated debris. Can also be a failing water inlet valve. I check both.
Rattling or Vibrating
Often the condenser fan hitting dust buildup, or a loose drain pan vibrating against the fridge body. Also common: the fridge is sitting on an uneven floor. I tighten loose components and level the unit.
Banging or Knocking
Usually the ice maker dumping ice into the bin (normal) or the compressor mounting vibrating loose (not normal). Loud knocking from the back is often the condenser fan hitting debris.
Scraping Sound from Freezer
The evaporator fan blade is hitting accumulated frost or ice. This happens in Aurora when the defrost system has partially failed. The frost needs to be cleared and the defrost system diagnosed.
Gurgling or Bubbling
Usually normal refrigerant flow sounds β most pronounced when the compressor first starts. If the gurgling is constant and the fridge isn’t cooling properly, there may be a refrigerant issue. I can tell the difference.
Is a noisy refrigerator dangerous?
Not immediately, but noises indicate mechanical stress that will progress. A clicking compressor will eventually fail completely. A scraping evaporator fan will eventually stop turning, causing the freezer to warm up. A rattling condenser fan can lead to compressor overheating. I recommend addressing refrigerator noises within 1β2 weeks rather than waiting for a complete failure.
Why Refrigerators Get Noisier in Aurora
Aurora’s altitude (5,436 ft) and temperature extremes create conditions where refrigerator components work harder than at sea level. Compressors run longer cycles, fans spin at higher sustained loads, and the temperature differential between a hot Aurora summer kitchen and the cold freezer interior stresses seals and bearings faster. A refrigerator that was quiet for 5 years may start making noise in year 6 precisely because of cumulative wear from these conditions.

My refrigerator started making noise after I moved it β what happened?
Moving a refrigerator can dislodge the drain pan, loosen the condenser fan bracket, or shift refrigerant in the sealed system. If it started immediately after moving, it’s usually physical β I can check and re-seat loose components. If it started days later, it may be refrigerant-related.
How loud is normal refrigerator noise?
A normal refrigerator hum is 40β50 decibels β about the sound of a quiet library. You should hear it softly when standing near the fridge but not from across the room. If you can hear it clearly from the living room or it’s woken you up, it’s too loud and something is wrong.
