Refrigerator Freezer
Not Freezing — Aurora CO
Freezer warming up, not maintaining temperature, or partially frosted? Same-day diagnosis and repair across all Aurora ZIP codes.
A freezer that won’t freeze is different from a fridge that won’t cool — the freezer is the colder zone and has its own thermal mechanics. When the freezer stops working in Aurora, there are a handful of causes I see consistently. Most are fixable same day.
Why is my freezer not getting cold enough in Aurora?
A freezer that runs but won’t reach proper temperature (0°F) is usually suffering from one of three things: a defrost system failure that’s let ice block the evaporator coil (most common), a failing compressor or start relay that can’t build sufficient pressure, or a refrigerant leak in the sealed system. If your freezer is at 20–25°F instead of 0°F, the defrost system is the first place I look.
Common Causes of Freezer Not Freezing
Defrost System Failure
The #1 cause. The defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fails, frost builds up on the evaporator coil, and cold air can no longer circulate. The freezer gradually gets warmer over days. Repair: $130–$200.
Failed Evaporator Fan
Even if the evaporator coil is cold, the fan has to move that cold air through the freezer. Fan motor failures are common and easy to test — you can often hear the fan is not running. Repair: $130–$190.
Compressor or Start Relay Issue
If the compressor can’t reach full pressure, temperatures across both zones will rise. Start relay failures are a cheap fix; compressor replacement is more expensive. I diagnose which before quoting.
Refrigerant Leak
A slow refrigerant leak causes temperatures to gradually rise. The freezer usually shows it first. Signs: ice only forming in one area, compressor running constantly. EPA-certified sealed system work.
Door Gasket Failure
A compromised freezer door gasket lets warm air in constantly. Aurora’s UV exposure and temperature swings crack gaskets faster than in mild climates. Gasket replacement: $80–$140.
Overloaded Freezer
A completely packed freezer blocks airflow and can prevent the evaporator from doing its job. This is a free fix — check that air vents inside the freezer aren’t blocked by food or bags before calling.
How much does freezer repair cost in Aurora?
Defrost system repair (the most common cause): $130–$200. Evaporator fan replacement: $130–$190. Refrigerant leak repair: $280–$450. Door gasket: $80–$140. Diagnostic fee is $75, applied to your repair. I quote flat-rate before I start.
Aurora Temperature Swings and Freezer Stress
Aurora’s 90°F summer days are hard on freezers. Garage refrigerators and freezers in uninsulated spaces work significantly harder in summer — ambient temperatures above 95°F push some compressors past their rated limits. If your freezer stopped working in July or August, heat stress is likely a contributing factor. I’ll check the condenser and compressor carefully on hot-weather calls.

My freezer is at 15°F instead of 0°F — is that a big deal?
Yes. USDA recommends 0°F for food safety. At 15°F, ice cream softens, frozen meat thaws on the surface during storage, and food spoilage accelerates. The freezer is failing and will continue to get warmer. Call me — it’s usually a same-day fix.
Can I defrost the freezer myself to fix it temporarily?
Yes — a manual defrost (unplug the fridge for 24–48 hours with the freezer door open) will clear an iced-over evaporator temporarily. But unless you fix the defrost system, the frost will return within 1–3 weeks and you’ll be back in the same situation. I can do the permanent fix same day.
